Quips and Quotes: A to Z Blogging Challenge

I don't know about you, but I love little words of wisdom...short and sweet.  That's why I have read through this tiny book that I found in our church library: "Salt Cellars"gathered by Charles H. Spurgeon, (1834-1892) a British Baptist Preacher.

Charles H. Spurgeon,  www.godrules.net/library/spurgeon

In the Forward of the book, Spurgeon defines a proverb or saying as having three components:

Shortness, Sense and Salt!

Here are a few of my favorites:

Children speak words, men should speak things..there are many old children, and very few well-grown men.

A courageous foe is more to be admired than a cowardly friend.

A man without courage is like a knife without an edge.

A short cut is often the longest way.

A contented mind has a continual feast.

A journey of a thousand miles is begun with a step.

Better be half an hour too soon than a minute too late.

You will be the same person next year, than you are today, except for the people you meet and the books you will read.

Every lock of sorrow has a key of promise to fit it.

Great oaks were once little acorns...despise not the day of small things.

Hard words often come from soft heads.

He is wise who follows the wise.

He that is full of himself is very empty.

He who is always resting will soon be rusting.

Honor your parents, and your children will honor you.

Idle people are dead people that you can't bury.

If one door shuts, another will open.

In deep waters men find great pearls.

It takes a long time to say nothing.

Keep your mouth shut, and no flies will get in.

Knowledge is power.

Life isn't all sunshine, nor is it all shade;
There are profits and losses in every trade.

What about you...which quote rings true with you?

    1. That's a good one, Julie...although, I need to rest more. There is no chance that I will rust anytime soon!

  3. These were all so good, it's hard to pick one. I think the one about the shortcut being the longest way struck a chord with me because of the way the streets run around here. I've often been frustrated that in trying to take a shorter route due to traffic, it will sometimes cause me an even greater delay! There are some practical lessons to be learned right there...

    1. That's a good observation, Daisy! I try to take shortcuts sometimes in my daily life, and it ends up causing me more work and time...go figure!

  4. I love "it takes a long time to say nothing" :) this made me giggle. There is some truth in it. I love quotes. A friend of mine recently pointed me to a website with misquoted quotes, that was fun :D Some very famous quotes were not written like that at all!

    1. I'm sure just like the game 'telephone', some quotes never make it to the present day in their original form. Thanks for the insights, Sylvia!

  5. I've found you through A - Z.
You shared some terrific quotes, particularly this one, He that is full of himself is very empty.
The Spurgeon book seems quite interesting, I'll have to find it.
