Les Misérables: O is for Optician's Orb and a Prayer

"The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry."      Psalm 34:15

Obviously. The optician's advertisement one sees on the wall behind Jean is symbolic. He prays, God watches . . . and hears Valjean's prayer.

Twice he prays, and twice God answers "yes". Although God does not always promise an affirmative answer, His ears are always open to the supplication of the righteous.

Jean Valjean's prayer for Marius' safety:

God on high
Hear my prayer
In my need
You have always been there . . .

Bring him peace
Bring him joy
He is young
He is only a boy
You can take
You can give
Let him be
Let him live
If I die, let me die
Let him live
Bring him home . . .

Valjean is weak. He sees Cosette one last time, and then asks God to take him:

God on high,
Hear my prayer
Take me now
To thy care
Where you are,
Let me be
Take me now
Take me there,
Bring me home...

Forgive me all my trespasses
And take me to your glory.

Has God answered your prayers lately?

  2. So good to meet you, Moondustwriter! I'm glad to know another home educator. It is a privilege and a blessing to teach my own children. Yes, the book shows clearly good vs. evil, which you don't see in many modern novels.

  3. What an interesting idea for a blog--my family loved this movie, and my middle son is in fact obsessed with it. His dream is to play the role "Gavroche"!

    1. You never know, Marie. There are many community theatrical companies that are looking for just the right actor!
