The Cantankerous Cat: A to Z Blogging Challenge

Cats...you love them and, at times, you hate them!  Have you noticed there are more quotes and jokes about cats as opposed to dogs?

Maybe these quotes from "The Quotable Cat" selected by Denise Little, will give you a clue:

Cats invented self-esteem; there is not an insecure bone in their bodies.  Erma Bombeck

The smallest feline is a masterpiece. Leonardo Da Vinci

If animals could speak, the dog would be a blundering outspoken fellow, but the cat would have the rare grace of never saying a word too much.
Mark Twain

Playing the Sphinx

When it comes to the advantages of cats versus dogs as pets, there is no competition.  Try going away for a weekend, leaving your German Shepherd alone with a bowl of dry food, some water, and a litter box.
Robert Stearns

No amount of time can erase the memory of a good cat, and no amount of masking tape can remove his fur from your couch.
Leo Dworken

I had been told that the training procedure with cats was difficult.  It's not.  Mine had me trained in two days.  Bill Dana

Cats are dangerous companions for writers because cat-watching is a near perfect method of writing avoidance.  Dan Greenburg

Our Ragdoll, Cosette

Dogs come when they're called; cats take a message and get back to you.
Missy Dizick and Mary Bly

A cat will be your friend, but never your slave.  Théophile Gautier

"I am not amused"

Here are a few descriptive words for the cat:

neat and clean
quiet
scare easily
suspicious
sly
hate water
can't be lead around
will not fetch...only as it desires
meows and hisses and purrs and howls
tail wags sideways if angry
stealth

Can you think of others?  What is your cat joke or story??

  3. That is frustrating, Sylvia, although my Ragdolls supposedly do not have dander to cause allergies. It works for us... Thanks for stopping by and following. Enjoy the challenge!

  8. These quotes are all wonderful! I especially like, "the cat would have the rare grace of never saying a word too much."

Very happy to meet you, Jarm. I saw your comment just now on my Golden Movies post, C for Chinatown. Put a cat in THAT movie, and hmmm. I can see it scowling all the way through it!

    1. Thanks, Ann, for your words of encouragement...yes, cats are in a 'cat' agory of their own. Good to meet you, too, and I appreciate your visit to my blog....happy posting!

  9. I left a comment, but somehow it didn't come up!

Anyway, what I said was I'm happy to meet you. I saw your comment on my C for Chinatown post just now and came over to see you.

My youngest daughter LOVES cats. My disabled daughter likes them too. My favorite quote (above) is: "the cat would have the rare grace of never saying a word too much." Put a cat in the movie Chinatown and hmmm -- it would probably scowl all the way through it and we wouldn't know why!

  10. My cat Izzie can be quite bitchy but I do love her. ;) She follows me everywhere, probably because she knows I'm her food source. I have a lot of funny cat pictures on Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/jenlanebooks/funny/

Nothing like cat fur to make my nose itch! But I love them from a distance :)

  12. We love our cantankerous cat, Minnie. Our favorite story is the daily dog/cat "fights". Every time the dog tries to play with her she feigns disinterest, then attacks the unsuspecting dog as he walks away. I just don't get why he still turns his back on her.

    1. How funny, Jenn...you wonder how the dog puts up with it day after day. I guess that is why dogs are so faithful to their masters! Thanks for your comment and story...

  13. I'm a cat person so I enjoyed your post to the fullest. I mean, I love dogs, they're sweet and loving and loyal, but there's something about cats that is special. They are friends but do not hover nor depend on you. I truly like their graciousness and cat jokes never get old.

    Great post!
